Troubleshooting Guide

Diagnosing the most common types of swimming pools problems.

Losing Water

If you are losing water in your swimming pool, the following steps will help isolate the problem area:

  1. Turn off pump and plug all returns with the plugs used for winterization.
  2. Mark the water level with a piece of duct tape and leave system off overnight.
  3. If water has fallen below the tape mark then there is either a hole in the liner or a leak in the main drain. Call Paradigm Pools to arrange for a leak detection specialist to inspect your pool.
  4. If while the system was off, your swimming pool stopped losing water, then there must be a leak in the return lines. Call our office for an appointment to conduct a return line pressure test to find the leak. Pressure test cost $90.00

Note: Once the leak is found, we charge a flat rate of $400.00 for a repair.

Pump Problems

  1. If your pump is 'running dry' or you can see bubbles through the glass lid, the following steps will help isolate the problem area.
    1. Your pump lid may need a new o-ring. Over time, the o-rings deteriorate allowing air to seep into the pump. This is the most common cause of the problem.
    2. If the new o-ring does not correct the problem, a leak could exist in the skimmer or suction line. When this happens, the pump not only sucks water from the pool, but also the surrounding air allowing that air to get into the pump.
Note: It is extremely important that you do not let your pump run dry as it will burn out the motor.
  2. Pump is making a loud grinding noise
    • The most likely cause of a loud grinding noise from the pool pump is the pump bearings. The pump bearings will most likely require replacement. Paradigm Pools does not replace pump bearings. Please contact John Pare at JC Welder Repair, (519) 999-2410; they are located at 716 Ducharme Street in Windsor, Ontario.
  3. Pump motor will not start
    • The most common pump motor problem is motor burn out either due to age, use or the pump running dry for a long period of time. The motor will need to be repaired or replaced. Paradigm Pools does not repair pool pump motors. Please contact John Pare at JC Welder Repair, (519) 999-2410; they are located at 716 Ducharme Street in Windsor, Ontario. Sometimes it is less expensive to purchase a whole new pump versus having the motor repaired. The service person at JC Welder Repair will advise you accordingly, if this is the case.

Heaters

Heater keeps shutting off.

The heater will shut off if there is too low a pressure leaving the filter. The low pressure will trigger the pressure switch to turn the heater off. Backwash the filter and try the heater again. If the problem persists, the heater will need repair or service. Paradigm Pools does not repair pool heaters as we are not licensed for gas work. Please contact Weir Brothers, (519) 969-1144, who are the authorized repair company for Teledyne Laars Heaters. They will also repair other pool heater brands.
